Podlasie

There is a place in Poland, where time seems to have stopped for a while. It is Podlasie (north-eastern Poland). Wild river Narew flows there branched into many sinous river channels. It is the only such river in Europe (and one of the very few in the world). In spring and summer time the upper Narew swamp valley is flooded forming an area called the “Polish Amazonia” (this area belongs to the Narew National Park)

The unique character of this part of Poland is also determined by the characteristic of rural architecture – old wooden houses are decorated with wooden ornaments. Unfortunately, you can also see there a lack of respect for the local material tradition. There are numerous examples of improper inclusions spoiling the local culture landscape. For example a nasty tile or pavement created with concrete cubes mismatching an old wooden cottage. What survived are typical Polish garden flowers with mallows, usually decorating front of the houses.

The photos were taken in 2013 by geographer and explorer Marek Angiel.
