Washhouse in Chochołów

It is an old tradition to wash houses before Easter in Chochołów, the old highland village, located 20 km from Zakopane, the capital of the Tatra Mountains. Chochołów is almost entirely built up of 200 years old wooden cottages, situated along the main road with their short side to the street, so densely that there is not enough space for the fences.

In one of these houses a folk sculpturer Jan Zięder creates his naïve figures. But although Chochołów looks a bit like an open air museum, here and there you can see some modern buildings in so called Zakopane style, created in early 20th century and very popular in mountains nowadays. Pictures made by Dorota and Mariusz Mazur (April 2015).
