For over 25 years, in the first days of May, in the Książ Castle (Lower Silesia) Festival of Flowers takes place. Decorative bouquets are the loveliest decoration of the castle chambers. Among them you can find a bouquet of daisies, allocated for the former lady of the palace, Princess Maria Theresa Olivia Hochberg von Pless, simply known as Daisy (she was an English woman).
Daisy was like a flower – beautiful, wise and good, but she was not happy. It is worth to remember her when visiting Książ. And who comes there by accident in the first days of May, should necessarily pay a visit! The festival includes not only an indoor exhibition of bouquets but also flower gardens outside. I love looking at the photos of the castle because my father visited there when he was a prisoner of war and doing slave labor at the glass factory in what was then called Waldenburg. The men were on the March before the Russians arrived before the end of the war. It was the beginning of the death march across Europe that my father somehow survived. Someone (maybe one of the guards) told them they had worked at the castle and allowed them to look around. Nothing was mentioned about the tunnels underneath, but they were led to look in the stables. There were many fabulous carriages there. Very decorative. My father rarely spoke of his prison time but being able to talk about the castle allowed him to open up a bit about his incarceration. He always talks about the people from the town and how they were good to him. While working in the glass factory he made and fixed wooden shoes. His name is Clarence Adams and he is still alive. thank you very much for an interesting note about your father stay in Walbrzych (Waldenburg). This area is presently very famous for the probably (who knows the truth) hidden “golden train” from WW II time. I highly invite you to pay a visit in this lovely area including the castle Ksiaz. There are indeed kept some historical carriages. What concerns people remembering your father – it requires some search. Please, write to me if you would like to start some investigation. But British soldier there had to be something unusual, so…
